Fundraising for Finlay

Our Fundraising Goals

HOME ADAPTATIONS

We need to raise £20k for essential adaptations to our home. These include the installation of a stairlift to enable Finlay to continue to share a room with his twin brother upstairs whilst he is able, an extension which will provide Finlay with an accessible bedroom and bathroom when it is necessary that he sleeps downstairs, an extension to the kitchen and some internal adjustments so that Finlay has access to the whole house in his wheelchair or walker. Once the building work is complete we will need to carpet and fit out FInlay's new bedroom.

We also need a shed for extra strorage space for Finlay's equipment and a Summerhouse as a safe space for Finlay to play in the garden.

We have applied for, and been accepted for a Disabled Facilities Grant. The council’s preferred scheme has been priced at £82,294, however our preferred scheme has been priced at £95,225. We are therefore trying to raise the difference of £12,931.

Whilst the adaptations are taking place we will be unable to live in our house, although we will still have to pay the mortgage!!  We are therefore also raising funds so we can rent somewhere whilst the work is taking place.

Please help us to make Finlay's life as normal and as independent as possible.

SELECTIVE DORSAL RHIZOTOMY (SDR)
In January 2016 we were advised that Finlay meets the criteria to have the life changing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operation, however NHS have withdrawn the funding so we are having to raise the money ourselves. The operation and after care costs are in excess of £30k. This operation could mean that Finlay would able to walk short distances independently.

We recently (March 2017) took Finlay for a routine pre-operative screening. However, it was discovered by doctors at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children that Finlay’s hip joints have deteriorated and that he will now require a further operation on his hips prior to SDR.

The hip operation will be funded by the NHS, however following the hip surgery Finlay will require 12 months of intensive rehabilitative physiotherapy to ensure the best outcome from SDR.

It is heart-wrenching to think that Finlay now has to endure two separate procedures. However, this is just a setback, and although it is disappointing, the upside is that this has been caught early so can be remedied before causing Finlay pain and discomfort.

In light of this we have increased our fundraising goal to cover the cost of the rehabilitative therapy after the hip operation, thus ensuring the best outcome from SDR.
